The British Red Cross provides a transport and escort service throughout Ayrshire and Arran. This service offers freedom and independence for people who have difficulty travelling and using ordinary transport. By providing drivers and escorts where needed, we help people to get to hospital or doctors appointments.

The British Red Cross Isle of Arran Transport and Escort Service can help you if you are:

  • Elderly
  • Infirm
  • Have difficulty using public transport
  • Disabled
  • Recovering from illness or injury
  • Lacking in confidence

Our co-ordinator can quickly assess eligibility and suitability for the service based on the information provided by you or your health professional.

Transport Provided

The British Red Cross offers a car service to provide assistance with travel between your home and either:

  • The ferry terminal at Brodick
  • The Arran War Memorial Hospital

From Ardrossan Ferry Terminal we can provide a suitable vehicle and a driver to provide transport between:

  • Ayrshire Central Hospital
  • Crosshouse Hospital
  • Ayr Hospital

This service must be booked. The Red Cross are unable to guarantee transport with less than 48 hours notice of a booking, but will do their best to help.

This service is operated by a fully trained senior driver, supported by a dedicated and valued group of volunteers.

Training

British Red Cross volunteers participate in a training programme to ensure they have all of the appropriate skills and knowledge necessary. This includes driver assessment, health and safety and manual handling. All volunteers are bound by confidentiality.

Impartiality

The British Red Cross will help anyone in need. No one will be turned away because of age or circumstances. The Red Cross policy of impartiality is applied. No distinction is made as to nationality, race, religion, class or political opinions.

Costs

The British Red Cross Arran Transport and Access Service is partially funded by the British Red Cross, North Ayrshire Council and the Scottish Executive Rural Community Transport Initiative.

To assist in meeting operational expenditure, a small charge will be applied, per person, for each return journey to offset running costs.

As a registered charity the British Red Cross relies heavily on donations and the good will of the community. Any additional contributions will be gratefully received and will help us to respond to the needs of those in crisis.
