Information about the School Nursing Service

What does a school nurse do?

Every school in Ayrshire has a named school nurse. School nurses are specialist nurses with a specific interest in the health and wellbeing of school-age children. All primary one children are offered a health interview with their named school nurse.

The school nursing service follows a core programme of work which includes immunisation, height, weight, Body Mass Index (BMI), referrals to other agencies, individual support and confidential advice to parents, education staff and young people.

Contribution to the personal, social and health education programme within all schools is a major aspect of the school nurse’s role. Working in partnership, school nurses ensure that provision is in place for children with any additional health care needs, including those who are socially vulnerable or potentially at risk of harm.
